First Announcement and Call for Abstract Submission

The Fourth International Workshop on Multi-observations and

Interpretations of Tibet, Xinjiang and Siberia (TibXS)

4th TibXS Workshop, July 28-August 1, 2013, YiNing, Xinjiang, China

Organized and sponsored by

School of Geodesy and Geomatics/Key Laboratory of Geospace Environment and Geodesy, Wuhan University, Wuhan 430079, China;

Department  of Civil  Engineering,  National  Chiao  Tung  University, Hsinchu  , Taiwan;

International Association of Geodesy, Joint Working Group 2.4 (TibXS),Subcommission2.5 (Satellite altimetry) and Subcommission4.4 (Applications of Satellite and Airborne Imaging Systems)

Background information

ibet, Xinjiang and Siberia (TibXS) are regions reflecting consequences of climate change and manifesting active geodynamic processing. Two sample consequences of climate change are melting of mountain glaciers and steady decline or increase of lake level. Melting of high mountain glaciers in the high mountains of Asia and Tibet affects more than one billion of people in China and India. However, the glacier equilibrium lines at some of the glacier monitoring sites in Asia show both advancement and retreat, suggesting that one type of data alone cannot be used fully understand the mechanisms of mountain glacier changes. The high number of fatalities in the Ya’an earthquake of April 20, 2013, China, highlights the importance of a long-term monitoring of the tectonic behavior within and neighboring the Tibet Plateau. Over the past decade, there has been a tremendous advance in the geodetic and geophysical techniques that can be utilized for the detections of long-term and episodic geodynamic process and climate change. In TibXS, the GRACE time-varying gravity fields contain a wide of range of signals of mass-change origins awaiting in-depth interpretations that require skills of different disciplines. The recent launch of Croysat-2 provides an opportunity for detecting surface changes in regions where conventional radar altimeters cannot deliver meaningful results. InSAR is used to estimate crustal velocities in Tibet, but there have been contrasting results in some earthquakes. A superconducting gravimeter has now been installed in Lhasa, providing in situ measurements to validate gravity changes from satellite gravity missions. The steady gravity mission, GOCE, has produced new gravity fields revealing new tectonic features in TibXS. Under the support of IAG Commissions 2 and 3, this workshop is organized in response to the call to continue the geodetic studies in TibXS, with an objective to understand the climate change and the geodynamic process in TibXS. The Scientific and Local Organizing Committee welcome world scientists to join the workshop.

       2, ERS-1, -2 and ENVISAT

2 Preliminary Cryosat-2 result

2 Results of satellite and terrestrial-based gravimetric observations

2 Results of GNSS observations, GNSS meteorology and ionosphere

2 Regional hydrology, vertical displacement, glacier change, lake level change and their

        interpretations  from altimeter, GPS, monthly GRACE fields and superconducting gravimeter;

2 Various applications, geophysical interpretations and consequences of gravity, GNSS, satellite

      altimetry and seismic observations

2 Polar motion and length of day variation caused by mass migration in TibXS

Special issue of a SCI journal

Selected contributions from this workshop and solicited papers will be encouraged to submit to a special issue of a SCI-indexed journal. The journal and the guest editors will be announced later. The tentative deadline of full paper submission is Jan. 15, 2014.

On-site registration on 28 July 2013 is recommended. The registration fee is 260 USD (or RMB

1600). For accompanying adults, the registration fee is 80 USD (or RMB 500).

Formal language of the Workshop

All abstracts, full papers, and presentations should be given in English.

Best Paper Awards for Graduate Students

During the meeting, best paper awards for 6 students (Master or Doctor candidates) will be selected by the Scientific Committee. Extended abstract (four A4 pages, limited to 3000 words) should be submitted to Dr. HH Wang  (hhwang@sgg.whu.edu.cn) before the award-competition deadline of 1st July 2013 if you want to compete the award. The awards will be granted at the meeting closing session. The award candidate should be the first author of the paper submitted, who should give a presentation at the meeting.

Scientific Tours

Scientific tours in two separated lines will be respectively arranged.

Tour line 1: start in the morning on 1st of August from YiNing city (where the meeting is held), and end in the evening of 3rd August at Urumqi (capital city of Xinjiang, and the hotel accommodation from 3rd to 4th August, namely one night hotel living in Urumqi, is included). Your payment: about 2240 RMB + 1 flight fee from YiNing to Urumqi.
